Experience Italy and enjoy a journey through the lives of two men whose lives are affected the one by the other The descriptions of the Italian settings, the food and the people set the scene beautifully for two love affairs The writing made me feel as though I was actually there watching the story unfold. The romance in the first part of the novel, set in 1934, develops cautiously though inevitably, despite the main character s concerns, but that is not the whole story Political intrigue and family issues are darker themes to get in the way of Max s hopes and desires. The second part, set in 1985 introduces Paul, the grandson of Max who wants to find out about his family s links with Italy Again the detail is wonderful The connections are revealed gradually and some characters from the first part of the novel appear once Paul has a modern approach to love and romance as the reader might expect, and this does introduce an element of humour to the otherwise difficult situations he encounters.I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story, as well as learning much that I didn t know about Italy s past References to Italian Art and Literature added an extra dimension leaving me wanting to know about the country and its culture I recommend this novel and hope to read further work by this author.
